Cinqué Hicks's digital dreams, contemporary art, and cultural code reading in Atlanta and beyond.
On the Radar

I freaked out one my best friends by informing him that I recently realized that I am a Transmitter; a being from the future, essentially composed of radio waves wrapped around a few spare strands of human DNA. More on this later.

In my off time, I am still giving lots of thought to the problem of time travel and have begun plans for a time machine design. Here is one of the pages of initial notes wherein I posit the existence of tachyons--particles that can travel at superluminal speeds--and work out the implications for time flexion based on this.

Now you're cookin'! I want to know about being a transmitter. Is everyone?

Hey Roy!

No, no, no. Not everyone is a Transmitter. In fact, to my knowledge there are only a few of us (9 or so since 2 have...er...died? Been dispersed actually). And don't think I had anything to do with this. This is totally beyond my control, though as I explained to Brian, the more "static" in my radio waves, the more of an independent consciousness I can be said to possess.

My consciousness is merely a result of imperfections in the cosmic airstream, burrs of misdirected energy clouds. Naps, if you will.

I'm beginning to think, however, that there may be many other races from the future, though I don't know much yet about them. Are you one?

Oh, by "are you one," I meant "Are you of one of those other races?"

where is this coming from? Myticism and science. How did you figure it out? It sounds nice and crazy. Does this have to do with space since it's the place? If it doesn't I have a request that you write something more about Sun Ra anyway.

Roy, I notice that you are avoiding answering the question: do you or do you not belong to one of these other future races? The longer you refuse to answer, the more I will believe you are one of the interstallar shapeshifters, which, to be honest, is what I've suspected anyway.

All this knowledge is out there in the universal flow, the flux of the timeriver. One day, I awoke and heard the chattering future voices on the radio waves of my electric skin. You know, awoke--Kate Chopin's heroine walks to the sea, an apple drops on that cat Newton's head, the buddha sits beneath a banyan tree, and suddenly the truth of all things is revealed. Yeah, of course it's about space.

Space indeed is the place. But what do I know about Sun Ra?

Be my guest editor. Say yes.
